17 Things About Living in Constant Rain

  1. If the upholstery in our car gets wet, it’s no problem; it will dry in April
  2. My bath towel before a shower is often only a little less wet than it was after the previous night’s shower
  3. Golf umbrellas (which are huge) enable my daily walk to continue; at least my shoulders are dry
  4. Every time our dog goes out, her muddy paws have to be thoroughly massaged with a towel before she re-enters the house
  5. That towel, when hung outside, only gets wetter; we have an ongoing rotation of old blue towels adorning our porch
  6. I’ve lost any desire to dress cutely; I live in functional clothes and dark colors
  7. When I see a woman who has done her hair prettily, dressed in bright colors, and thrown functional attire out the window, I’m always inspired
  8. Our son’s dark circles under his eyes remind us that we’ve been negligent with the Vitamin D
  9. The scent of tea tree oil means my husband is on mold lookout
  10. Pulling the bathroom cabinet away from the wall each winter reveals a visual kaleidoscope of microbial self-expression
  11. Putting on clothes from my closet means feeling slightly damp for a few minutes
  12. I now choose to write at the library over my house to be around bright lights and human life
  13. Based on the rare few who still consider kayaking, I know who I would nominate for an extreme survival show
  14. We, a family of blonds in August, are a family of brunettes by February
  15. I don’t even see our garden or my bike for four months
  16. My husband dreams not of fancy cars but of spacious mud rooms
  17. Going to sleep under skylights is an auditory symphony that I love and will one day reminisce about
