Seattle Rock Orchestra’s Annual Visit to Orcas Island’s Doe Bay

My parents dragged me to the symphony every few months when I was growing up. I was bored out of my mind every second of it. The only thing that saved me was the thought of getting bubble gum ice cream at Swensen’s on the way home. I’d sit in the back seat of the car, licking through the vanilla ice cream just to get to each new piece of gum. When we’d pull into the garage, my wet hand would be cupped around a nervously high pile of spat-out balls of color. That’s what I got out of the symphony.

My mom played classical music all the time, so you’d think I’d naturally be “cultured” in this area. Sure, I can hum along with precision, almost unconsciously, to just about any Mozart or Beethoven that’s playing. I’ve tried to endure an hour or so of it on Pandora of my own doing, hoping it will finally gel with me. I even try it every year or so but end up changing the station within 20 minutes every time.

I’ve come to accept that this is much more my style….

Seattle Rock Orchestra plays outside at Doe Bay, one of the more remote areas of the island, for a fleeting hour and no more, free. I could listen to them for three. Michael Jackson, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, David Bowie, etc. Speaking of David Bowie, here is a more polished look at them in concert a few years ago.

Here’s more about them.

We’ll see you at Doe Bay next year….
