Out from the Cover of Darkness

As weird as it sounds, sometimes we don’t notice the newness happening all around us here until the sun finally comes out. All of a sudden, inconspicuous Orcas Island looks like a lush, life-filled paradise that had been hidden under a dark gray cover for months.

The bright greens pop, the flowers are blooming everywhere when they didn’t even seem to be the day before, and life is buzzing seemingly out of nowhere. Every time it happens, I think, “How did I not even see it coming? It didn’t happen overnight, but where was all of it day before yesterday when we were still in the gloom of it all? The only difference is that the sun is shining and everything suddenly looks spectacular!”

Yesterday morning we awakened to a clear sky and a menagerie of singing birds outside. It’s like the volume on spring went from 1 to 10 in a heartbeat. We could hear the Canada geese honking on Indian Island. The warm sun was beaming down, glinting off calm ocean ripples. I felt like I was going to blow a gasket – a good one!

It’s always when I’ve gotten just about to the end of my rope with grayness that the sun finally comes out and rescues me. Had you never visited Orcas Island until yesterday, you would think this is just how it always is – stunning, bright, verdant, and clear. That’s why when the sunny weather takes over, it’s easy to set aside all the gloomy days of endurance.

When gray skies and brown landscapes are the norm…

This blows your mind…

What a difference it is – the simple addition of light to a person’s life. There’s no way a few photos can communicate what’s going on inside the brain.

Today there’s a cloud cover again with intermittent brightness, but noticeable change has come. It’s the first time I’ve felt like going in the garden since last fall. What a boost, too, to see Lorna’s nursery next to the store (Driftwood Nursery) suddenly open, full of brightly colored flowers. I just planted my first purchase of the season.

Here’s a little progression of life here since February 13th…

May spring (and a vaccination appointment!) bring hope, lightness, and a fresh start to your life!
