An Afternoon Jaunt to Friday Harbor

Playing tourist for several hours and visiting another island is like an easy, lighthearted mini-vacation. It takes about 45 minutes (if you pick the right ferry) to get to San Juan Island. The town of Friday Harbor sits right where the ferry sets your feet on land. The days are so long right now that if you go over for a few hours, you still have plenty of sunlight to do other things when you get back to Orcas.

Come along on a little tour from the Orcas ferry landing to Friday Harbor and back…

One of my favorite simple pleasures is lying down on a dock and watching the miraculous creatures below. I could do it for hours. I hope my kids never outgrow doing it with me!

I grew up watching the creatures off the dock at the Morro Bay Yacht Club in California. My aunt and uncle lived on their boat there, and they would periodically take us on sailing trips to the Channel Islands. My uncle always put off the maintenance of his boat, so we would invariably show up for a weekend trip and he’d be in his dive suit under the boat, or running off to the hardware store for parts. Hours would elapse, sometimes days, but it didn’t matter to me. I was happy as a clam watching crabs of all kinds congregate under the ramp to the dock. It was like a dreamland compared to the concrete I stared at for my first decade of life in Texas.
