Sunspice’s Grand Opening Today

I’ve walked past this building and its twin for the past eight years and fantasized about their potential. They’re sitting on one of the most enviable locations on the island – at the beginning of town, overlooking the Sound through a line of trees facing Indian Island.

In all of those years, I never envisioned the kind of thing that Ashley Welch dreamed up and worked toward making a reality – a multi-room health bar featuring drinks made of specific combinations of herbs, spices, and healing botanical elements straight from the earth. Years of learning, concocting, packaging, photographing, and peddling led to this day – her grand, colorful, beautiful, aesthetically-wowing opening (Thursday, July 2nd).

There are seven decaffeinated (hot or iced) herbal latte combinations to choose from (all vegan, sugarless, dairy-free, and grain-free), each enhancing a different body system associated with the seven chakras – Heart, Mind, Gut, Throat, Power (hormones), Root (circulation), Beyond (mood) – and an eighth that is an herbal caffeinated coffee alternative – Spice. You can also buy a whole bag of whichever combination you prefer to take home and make whenever you desire.

Ashley also makes refreshing Blue Juice and Charcoal Lemonade, and handcrafts healthful, alluring little delicacies to munch on.

When COVID shut us down for three months, I wondered what sorts of dreams people were quietly working on, undeterred by the uncertainty in the world. You’ll have to come see this one. You will enjoy the intentionality evident in the decision of every item, every fixture, every rug, every accent, every texture. Even the feel of the bathroom is totally rethought.

Whether it’s a chilly, windy day or a bright, balmy paradise outside, you’ll find a drink that fits the atmosphere. Take a little jaunt into Eastsound, to 19 Fishing Alley. Sunspice is open from 9-4, Thursday through Monday.

Ashley removed her face covering at safe times and distances for photos.

  1. Great ‘green’ new business and photos. Sorry, we won’t be visiting this summer …. just trying to keep everyone safe. Very dissapointed.

    • Oh, it’s sad to not visit – I’ll keep posting things so you can live vicariously through them!
