4th of July’s Refreshing Normalcy

Freedom took on a whole new meaning at today’s 4th of July parade. With the mask mandate newly lifted from San Juan County – one of the most highly vaccinated counties in the nation – today was a celebration not only of our country’s freedom but also our personal, physical freedom. It felt so good to walk around, brush past others, smile at each other from ear to ear, and celebrate in normal human ways, muffled no more by fabric muting our voices and humidity fogging our glasses.

Oh, the mass of humanity was a sight and feeling to behold, filling the low tank of human connection to the brim. I felt a wonderful, giddy sense of spilling over today. It’s the first unmasked, non-distanced, packed gathering we’ve had here on the island since March of 2020. During the dark times, we wondered if people would be able to bounce back into normalcy or if it would take awhile for people to be near one another. Today’s answer? BAM!! We’re back!!

In case you missed it, or in case you need some more of it, here ya go…

This afternoon filled my tank. I hope it filled yours too. Hooray for freedom – in every way!!!
