Don’t Be Foolish, Texans

I can’t believe the governor in my home state (during childhood) has opened Texas up completely. It’s daunting foolishness, considering how long we’ve been waiting for the moment when we can finally be safe together, and how very close we are to that moment. To jump the gun on it is beyond unwise.

I don’t watch the news much, and my husband just read it to me yesterday. I can’t believe it. I guess I can, as we’ve watched leaders do this over and over, only to see the contamination numbers spike every time. I guess some people will not accept basic cause and effect.

Texans, your leader may have declared it possible for you to gather together and ditch your masks, but his proclamation means nothing to the virus. It will be given another chance to spread like wildfire. Keep your masks on. Don’t gather until you’re vaccinated. Wait the recommended time after your inoculation to gather with others. You’re so close to doing it the safe way. Don’t blow it all over again. You just suffered a freezing storm with power outages that made your living rooms below 32 degrees and broke pipes that flooded your homes. You don’t need yet another setback. You can choose to be safe even if your neighbors are throwing caution to the wind.

Islanders, thank you for being wise. For masking. For withholding communal events that would endanger us. We’re all sick to death of masks and isolation, but dang, it’s better than being sick and dead.

To gather now – on the brink of actually having the tools to combat this thing inside our bodies – lacks common sense, good judgment, and is just plain stupid.

  1. Hi Edee! I too, was disappointed in the way the change in Texas’ policies were announced. I can understand part of it; since we know there will be protesters who will not wear protection, Texas doesn’t want to fill up their courts prosecuting these cases, nor do they want to waste police officer’s time on acts of defiance, nor do they want to put the responsibility on regular citizens (shopkeepers, wait-staff, etc.) to have to enforce or even confront the issue on a daily basis.
So yes, I can understand Texas announcing that they will not continue to PROSECUTE offenders, but still advise their citizens to follow health guidelines.
That would have been acceptable in my opinion. But they way they announced it, “Texas is now 100% open!!!” was irresponsible and damaging.
A clear example of poor leadership.
