Marathoning Around the World

Meet Brian and Jackie. The other day before heading up the Turtleback trail, they walked by my car and we started chatting. Look at his shirt.

It says Bagan Temple Marathon Myanmar.

Whoa whoa whoa. Wait a minute. A marathoner who has run in Myanmar (formerly Burma)? I had to ask about that! It turns out he and daughter Jackie travel the globe one marathon at a time as a way of seeing the world. They’ve done the Great Wall Marathon in China, the Petra Desert Marathon in Jordan, the Big Five Marathon in South Africa, and marathons in Lake Tahoe, Arizona, Idaho, and Canada. The next one on their list is the Iceland Volcano Marathon. They like to go through a company called Albatros Adventure Marathons.

Brian and Jackie would have been in Tokyo right now, but it was decided that foreign visitors would not be permitted to attend the Olympics.

I was so intrigued. I wished I could ask about 30 more questions but they were ready for their hiking circuit. I hope I run into them again somewhere in the world so I can learn more about their lives…
