Photo of the Day: Stocking Up on Mainland Groceries

The other day, our fridge and shelves were close to barren aside from condiments. I decided it was time. Without consulting ferry reservations, I drove straight to Costco, then drove straight home. With blinders on, I avoided all other possible stops. I didn’t want to go anywhere or buy anything that didn’t have to do with groceries. Just a direct hit. A quickie.

A quickie it was. ‘Just’ eight hours – 12:30 to 8:30. What a relief compared to leaving the house at 6 AM and returning at bedtime.

Though it always feels obscene to buy a carload of food in one day, and to pay a month’s worth at one grocery stop. All part of living on an island…

A voyage to the mainland for groceries gives your life an epic quality mainlanders cannot easily imagine. When I lived on Vashon, locals referred to it as “the Rock” for its isolation but were always glad to come home.
