Orcas Island Marine Life

The other day on the way to school at noon (I homeschool our younger one in the mornings), we noticed that the tide was at an extreme low. That means a trail called a tombolo emerges from the water that leads from the beach to a little island right off Eastsound called Indian Island. Biodiversity abounds there, slinking through momentary tidepools and hanging off the undersides of rocks that are normally submerged.

My son said, “Mom, can we pleeeease go out to Indian Island instead of school today?” I’m not usually flexible with that kind of thing, but I had a feeling that even his teacher would agree with his request. Indian Island is a menagerie of fascinating marine life. So we did it. We turned around, stopped in the house for a bucket and boots, and shot a quick email to his teacher to let her know where we were instead of school.
