Building Character

When fall comes I’ll be homeschooling both boys. One of my ever-favorite things is the planning – gathering various resources from all ends of the earth and envisioning the different subjects we’ll wallow in. In the past, I’ve asked God to sew it all together as we go so that all the seemingly unrelated topics meld and entangle beautifully, which he’s done, quite amazingly.

This year one of the many plans I have is to combine interviewing skills, writing, recording, and media presentation with storytelling and character traits. I’d love for us to interview one person each week, in which our interviewee will tell us a poignant story from his or her life and then link it to a character trait that that experience helped them to build. I have some people in mind, but there’s no way I can know all the wonderful stories all of you might have.

Do you have a story from your past that helped make you who you are today? If so, please let me know if you’d like to come over and tell it to us. We would like to record you and present your story on some form of media yet to be determined. If you are interested but need some extra thoughts, here are some character traits to get your juices flowing:

  • Leadership
  • Hard Work
  • Generosity
  • Determination
  • Kindness
  • Persistence
  • Patience
  • Integrity
  • Loving One’s Enemy
  • Courage
  • Honesty
  • Self-Control
  • Forgiveness
  • Respect
  • Reliability
  • Optimism
  • Punctuality
  • Compassion

…and the list goes on.

Let me know if you have a story or if you know of someone whose life represents one of these by responding here on this blog. Thank you very much!
