Snowy Eastsound Night Magic

Last night the snow began around 4:30. Five hours later, downtown Eastsound was blanketed in white. It was absolutely silent, except for fierce gusts of wind now and then that sent snow swirling in funnels. No one was around. I didn’t want to come home, as the fallen snow lit my path and made views we rarely ever see…

I took the photos, but they were only possible thanks to the night mode on my son’s phone, which allowed images that would take too much time, would be too laborious, and would require too much exposure to the cold had I lugged my bulky photo gear around with me. It’s clear that iPhones are superior in just about every way now.

  4. Thank you for sharing your beautiful winter wonderland. Is this amount of snowfall unusual there?
Your photos are so dazzling. David loves his IPhone for photos, but it took our son’s encouragement to wean him off his 35 mm!
Orcas Island is so beautiful and more quaint than we recall. Is your cottage featured in any of these photos?
Thanks again. Keep the photos coming.

P.S. Our holidays were spent as a family in New Orleans this year…wonderful whirlwind.

    • Thank you Natalie! This kind of snow usually happens once or twice a year, sometimes not at all though. So we really enjoy every snowflake of it while it lasts.

  5. Magical indeed.
Your artistic eye at work capturing these magnificent images.
Guess you were with Demian too. Double header. Happy New Year

  10. Wow… nice pictures… what kind of phone is it that takes such wonderful photos?.

    • Thank you Kelly! It’s an iPhone 11. I’m stunned by the images it captures. I’ve rarely used Photoshop for anything, and the photos this thing takes all look incredible and beyond-Photoshopped. But there’s no tinkering here. Except that night mode made a very dark night look much more lit up. Amazing technology. To counteract potential shakiness, the phone takes 8 separate photos of the same thing, then chooses all the best pixels from each of the 8 shots to combine into 1 “perfect” shot. My son explained it to me, since he’s the new tech guru!

  11. Thank you from an ex- resident – part ol my heart will always claim it as home!

  28. My husband and I have been visiting Orcas Island on vacation since 2011. We found it to be magical from the moment we arrived and has remained so with every visit. We were just there over Christmas and the holiday lights in Eastsound added to the magic. Seeing your snow-covered pictures took magic to a whole other level! Beautiful! Thank you for sharing them.

Makes me think of small town America in years past. Maybe Mayberry RFD only they most likely did not have snow very often.

  36. Very impressive lighting. A stunning look at where we all live. You have an amazing eye for composition. Awesome!

    Mike

  37. It’s our own Winter Wonderland! Thanks Edee for taking a snowy walk through the village and sharing such lovely images.

  38. Wow,
Even w/out the wind, I am “blown away” by the winter beauty you’re caught of Eastsound!
Any chance you’d make the images into cards?
You particularly have an artistic “eye”! Thank
    you for sharing!

  39. What exquisite snow pictures/photos/photography!!! Thank you for capturing such beauty & magic! (Quite) awhile back, I wouldn’t even consider a digital camera, a camera. A Nikon~a camera, yes. Well now, the iPhone 11……GORGEOUS images! You did a beautiful job.

    • Thank you Susan! I know – I’ve been a Canon SLR girl for so long and now I’m totally won over by this iPhone all of a sudden.

  40. I am absolutely stunned by the beauty you have captured…and with a phone! After years of visiting, we will now call Orcas home…and I’m upgrading my phone! Thank you so much for sharing these gorgeous moments on this magical island.

    • Thank you so much, Pamela! Yes! You’ll love the iPhone 11! I need to stop borrowing my son’s and buck up! Literally!

  41. Great Photo Job!
    Thanks Dick T

  42. Thank you for showing the magic, sometimes it’s hard for others to see it, especially when they are struggling to get past the winter.
