Bob and Lark – A Hard Goodbye

Bob and Lark have been together for 23 years, since she was born. You’ve probably passed Lark a hundred times when you’ve been heading to the ferry and she’s been out grazing.

Lark was a descendent of champion horses…

But more importantly, she was a kind, gentle horse. A beautiful one, too.

Sadly, Lark developed a degenerative condition from sugar build-up in her system, similar to diabetes in humans. The result caused her terrible pain in her hooves, which would only worsen with each passing day.

Knowing that there would be no way to stop her impending debilitation, all the while keeping her as stable as possible with medication, Bob understood what he would have to do.

Bob is no stranger to having to say goodbye to beloved animals, but it doesn’t lessen the anguish.

A week ago, Bob and Iris took us out to see Lark and feed her some carrots and apple chunks.

The next day was Lark’s last day on earth.

Here are some of her final moments with Bob.

A veterinarian came out and first administered a sedative. After Lark ate some grain out of a bucket, giving time for the sedative to settle in, we all walked away so the vet could inject a double barbiturate.

Sweet Lark’s body now rests in peace as her spirit gallops painlessly in beautiful meadows.

Thank you, Bob, for the honor of allowing me to be present for her last moments with you and Iris. I love you both.

Until we meet again, lovely lady….
