What a feeling it is to have Orcas Island back to normal. Our inner tanks are filling with every unmasked face we see, every smile we reciprocate, and every gathering we attend!
How appropriate it is that our local Brograss just put on a concert at the Village Green to continue ushering us back into wonderful normalcy, performing on their home stage a few nights ago. We islanders have watched these brothers grow up, entertaining us with phenomenal, jaw-dropping talent ever since they were young kids. It seems like just yesterday that they provided the musical entertainment for a community ice cream social out on the grass at Olga Artworks, and I think that was years before this clip from 2017.
If you missed it, here are some clips from the other night. They’re so grown up.
Following Brograss, we were treated to another talented performance by The Talbott Brothers, originally from Nebraska and now residing in Portland. They were absolutely fantastic as well. I think most of us in the audience could’ve stayed all night for endless songs by these brother bands.
Thanks so much to the Orcas Center – Dimitri Stankevich, Jake Perrine, etc. – for making sure these performances and community gatherings happen. I just realized that we totally missed numerous shows already – a travesty! To read about upcoming shows or to donate, click here. Many thanks, too, to the reliable and talented Kevin Dickey on sound – without him, none of these shows would sound or seem as musically effortless as they do.

Edee! theOrcasonian would like to include a link to your blog. You are doing such a wonderful job in reaching into our shared world and plucking out the juicy community stuff. Can we connect?
Thank you so much for your words, Lin! Definitely!
you may regret writing that things are back to “normal”. The Delta variant, the delta plus variant, and the Lambda variant are rampaging, particularly among the unvaxxed.
They don’t seem to have much respect even for vaccinated folks; the cases may be more mild but they also leave serious sequelae. Not even to mention that nonmaskers put the rest of the world in danger.
Antivaxxers also are putting all others in danger. The more cases, the easier it is for the virus to mutate and continue …
There won’t be. back to “normal” for a long time. The many not wearing masks in the audience, the lack of distancing…
How many more have to die before people realize that wearing a mask and distancing is a community caring thing to do?
It would be helpful if you could write about the reality of this situation. We
all want to take masks off, hug each other, socialize…
but the fat lady ain’t sung yet.
The more we take precautions, the more quickly we control this virus. The fewer people die or are left with serious med problems.
Thank you for listening.
