Rain here is usually a constant, light pitter-patter. Even when it’s “pouring,” it’s nothing like the storms I experienced growing up in Texas.
Over the last couple days, the rain was more than a pitter-patter and it just didn’t stop. If you were anything like us, you hunkered down and enjoyed some (more) family time and a cozy fire. Unbeknownst to us, the rain was doing things around the island that we didn’t even realize until the sun came out yesterday.
As we islanders came out of the woodwork to look around, we saw the power of millions of tiny little rain drops once they coalesce. There were raging outpourings of water – gushing out of tubes, shooting over cliffs, and rechanneling roads and driveways.
I’ll let the photos speak for themselves…
Any low place is now a lagoon No longer an itty bitty salmon creek This is someone’s driveway Kind neighbors with chainsaws Water is flowing down every hill it can This is shocking to look at in person – anyone who lives beyond Doe Bay Resort can’t get out of Doe Bay There are literal rapids flowing past that bridge and behind the Doe Bay Resort property Sometimes a curious peacock just happens by The deck at Doe Bay Cafe Where all that water empties out into the sea next to the resort Driving back toward town, you’re paralleling what’s now another raging river – it is not this tame in person The rowing house at Moran State Park – this is not normally even a trickle The Environmental Learning Center dock On the road from Deer Harbor toward West Sound this morning A river now cuts through the pasture along these barns in Crow Valley
Wow! Thanks for all those photos as the eyes while some of us hunker down. Well done!
Thank you Didier!
This really tells the story well. Great pictures. They really show the scale.
Thank you so much, Kathryn!!
The museum is asking for photos and commentary about the event. What you have would be an excellent addition to their archives.
Thank you Steve! I’m deep in a project but will see what I can do.
