Last Sunday’s 3rd Annual Family Tides Farm & Lummi Nation Fall Festival in Deer Harbor

Somehow this wasn’t on my radar the last two years, so I’m glad I heard about it and went this time around – it was wonderful.

John and Maia Vechey, you are doing fascinating things for the community, from an observer’s standpoint. This event that you held on your land was unbelievably generous. I’m still amazed that all food costs were covered in order for everyone who attended – and there were a LOT of us – to eat Johanna’s El Salvadoran food, Brandon’s Farm to Ferry tomato soup, pesto grilled cheese, and fried zucchini from your farm, and Lisa’s Sweet Craft Bakeshop macarons. You let us all pick out beautiful pumpkins straight from your patch behind the stage. And you created an event that involved not only the local artisans but the Lummi people with their songs and dance.

It appears as though the Fall Festival was just the tip o’ the iceberg, from what I am noticing you doing. Your community-mindedness is encompassing so many aspects of this island – working on The Peach Pit in the old Portofino’s as a hang-out for island youth, running Con’s, etc.

For those of you who missed the festival, here’s a little photo tour…
