New Life in Our “Backyard”

We always walk into an adventure when we’re out exploring nature here on the island. A bike ride on our first sunny day in a long time led to a walk out on the Indian Island tombolo revealed by an ultra low afternoon tide. (Tombolo: a sand or gravel bar connecting an island with the mainland or another island. – Merriam Webster)

There is always a docent on Indian Island when the tide makes it accessible for people to walk out to so that everyone explores the island and its inhabitants conscientiously. The docent allowed us to walk up to the top where two Canada goose nests were right near the driftwood-lined trail. What a treat! We had a Canada gosling for four days before finding a family for it, but I’ve never seen a goose’s nest full of eggs!

Today is sunny too, so back we went to the beach for some clay-ball-making with friends. There are several areas on our little beaches where the bluff is perfect clay material once made wet, so our kids have discovered.

How I love seeing blue sky again after half a year of gray and living outside all day long like nomads on continuous nature adventures again.
