The other day in the library, I was admiring a very professionally carved pumpkin that was sitting on the counter.
“Who did this?” I asked.
“She’s right over there,” pointed the librarian.
The artist happened to be a few footsteps away. Her name is Laura Hanks and I asked her how she was able to perfectly carve half of the top layer off of the pumpkin to make her design.
She draws her picture on contact paper, leaving lines on the pumpkin to guide her cuts. She then cuts partway down along the lines with an X-ACTO knife, and digs out the skin with pottery tools.
Beautiful work, Laura!
