My husband, an avid triathlete, watches the weather like a hawk. He’s found that weather.com is accurate almost to the minute, and he always knows exactly when his windows are for running and biking.
In the years we’ve been here, he’s never seen the “Wind Chill Warning” that was posted all last night. It said to beware – in just a few minutes you could get frostbite.
Because snow and cold are continuing through the end of the week, the Severe Weather Shelter in the basement of Orcas Island Community Church will be open every night from 7 PM to 8 AM until Monday morning the 20th.
If you know someone with nowhere to get warm or sleep, let them know that they are welcome to a cot, some hot chocolate, and a warm escape from the chill.
The Community Church is on Madrona Street in Eastsound, behind Island Market (look for the steeple). The Severe Weather Shelter is behind the church and down the steps to the basement, where there will be volunteers keeping the place open and cozy.
