This is the end of Orcas Island’s first week of sun, self-quarantining, and school at home. And of course, the continuation of another s – a plummeting stock market.
We walked to Orcas Christian School today to turn in work finished this week and pick up new assignments for next week (assembled with gloves). The teachers have been working around the clock to re-imagine, re-invent, and implement the remote continuation of their classroom trajectories. We are so grateful for their hard work since kids need to feel a sense of normalcy, routine, and purpose each day.
But turning around and walking back home was hard. Seeing the school oddly silent was way too Twilight Zone. Never again will our kids experience those same classroom settings they loved. It all ended so abruptly. No more time with those teachers. No time with other kids.
There are so many massive changes happening every day in people’s lives that I’m just grateful we had food and water to come home to tonight. Will those change? No one knows.
