Orcas Artist Studio Tour 2026: Charlie MacPherson

It all started when…

I took my first pottery class in 7th grade.  I loved the physicality of working with clay as well as seeing the final product emerge through each stage of the process. I was hooked. I took every class I could in high school and in college I ended up with a double major: invertebrate zoology and ceramics.

Fast forward many, many years and I now am able to work out of my studio on Orcas Island in Washington State. In addition to making my own pieces I give lessons and hold Clay and Cocktail events.

Each step provides an opportunity as well as a challenge – from throwing, to trimming, to glazing, to decorating. I tend to either throw delicate small pieces of porcelain or large chunky stoneware forms that show the throwing marks and unglazed sections of the piece. I hope you enjoy the finished product as much as I do the process of creating it!
